Uma leitura crítica do livro didático de língua portuguesa

This article, derived from the dissertation by Author (2023), offers a reflection on the role of language in shaping social relations, with an emphasis on the critical teaching of Portuguese. Grounded in the understanding of language as a social practice, the study aims to demonstrate how a critical reading of Portuguese language textbooks reveals that language instruction can go beyond normative grammar and contribute to the formation of critical subjects—individuals capable of recognizing, questioning, and transforming representations that sustain inequality and prejudice. This qualitative research draws on theorists such as Fiorin (2007), Hall (2016), Hooks (2013; 2019), Collins (2019), and Munanga (2005). At the end of the analyses, it is concluded that, by understanding language as a social practice and as a space of symbolic dispute, the students began to question previously naturalized representations, showing that the process not only broadened critical awareness but also strengthened their capacity for resistance
