Abstract

The approach to literature in basic education acts as both a means and an end in the teaching-learning process. While it helps develop a critical reader, it is a subject to be learned and problematized. In school, literature loses its autonomy and acquires extrinsic functions. A space of continuities, the school's commitment to an aesthetic-historical-dialectical approach, aimed at fostering the confrontation of worldviews represented in literature, also involves discussing the selected canon. Required reading for the 2023 University Entrance Exam at Rio de Janeiro State University, Paulina Chiziane's novel "Niketche: a history of polygamy" offers the opportunity to reflect on the role of literary reading, particularly that of Portuguese-speaking women writers. To facilitate this reflection, we will draw on the discussions of Gustavo Bernardo Krauze (2022) on the novel and the Exam, and Tiago Cavalcante da Silva (2018) on the teaching of literature in basic education.
