Abstract

This article proposes the concept of apparition as a symbolic and sensitive technology that functions as a counter-spell to colonial regimes of visibility. Understood not as representation, but as insurgent presence, the apparition emerges as a gesture of interruption — a fabulation of the sensible that escapes the grammar of normativity. The theoretical framework draws from Mignolo’s concept of the coloniality of seeing, Pollak’s subterranean memory, and Glissant’s ethics of opacity, while also incorporating bell hooks’s reflections on alterity and desire. The method follows a critical and essayistic approach, interweaving analysis of contemporary artistic practices — including those of Rona Neves, Pitô, Mariana Maia, Castiel Vitorino, and Aïda Muluneh — with a performative and poetic-political writing. The research is anchored in embodied practices, ritualistic visualities, and non-hegemonic forms of knowledge, understanding the body as both archive and language. As a conclusion, apparition is framed as a disruptive movement that unsettles colonial classificatory logic, reactivating forbidden memories and subaltern knowledges. It operates as a counter-hegemonic force that evokes alternate temporalities, affects, and ways of existing. The article asserts the body as a site of enunciation and world-making — where the invisible acts and re-enchants the sensible scene.
