Until it achieved scientific status, Linguistics went through successive phases, approaches, and distinct methods throughout history. Among these phases, Comparative Grammar, with a historical approach and one of the first systematic attempts at linguistic investigation, and Modern Phonology, with a synchronic approach to the functioning of the linguistic system, stand out. In this context, the present article aims to analyze and compare the methods of Comparative Grammar and Modern Phonology, identifying divergences, ruptures, continuities, and the contributions of these paradigms to linguistic studies. To this end, the article first traces an overview of the methods of Comparative Grammar, addressing its historical context, objectives, conception of language, levels of analysis, main representatives, among other aspects. Then, based on Saussurean structuralism, the Prague Circle, and generativism, it discusses the methods of Modern Phonology. Next, a comparative analysis is carried out between the two methods, synthesizing the main points of each methodological approach. Finally, the relevance and contribution of both are highlighted in relation to the epistemological refinement of linguistic science.
