Abstract

This article aims to analyze how students of the Languages and Literature undergraduate program in Amapá narrate their perspectives on pursuing a teaching degree today, considering the geographic reality of Amapá/the Amazon and the current decline in interest in teaching as a professional field. The research, of a qualitative-interpretive nature with a quali-quantitative bias, was conducted through an online questionnaire administered via the Google Forms platform, answered by 23 students affiliated with the State University of Amapá (UEAP), the Federal University of Amapá (UNIFAP), and the Federal Institute of Amapá (IFAP). The analysis of the participants' statements is grounded in the theoretical-methodological perspective on narrative proposed by Wortham (2001), particularly through the examination of three indexical cues: reference and predication, evaluative indexicals, and metapragmatic descriptors. The results reveal a predominantly young, female profile, marked by ambivalence between enthusiasm for teaching and the recognition of structural, financial, and symbolic precarities that pervade teacher education in the Amazonian context. The narratives also reveal heterogeneous positions regarding the federal Pé-de-Meia Licenciaturas program, perceived at times as a legitimate incentive and at other times as an exclusionary policy. It is concluded that the indexical cues analyzed make it possible to reveal how pre-service teachers construct, through language, teacher identities in formation, contributing to reflections on student retention policies aligned with the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4).
